Sights and attractions
- Vevelstad kirke was built in 1871. Even though large parts of the interior were sold in 1871, there is still a lot left to admire, for instance the beautiful altarpiece painted by the Italian artist Joseph Pisani. He is also the artist behind a wall painting on paper, which is part of the decoration behind the altarpiece and unique in its kind in Norway. In the year 1980, the church was restored back to its original appearance from the time around the extension in 1871.
- Vevelstad bygdetun Farm Museum is located close to the church, approximately 1 kilometer south of the ferry landing in Forvik. It was established in 1963 and consists of 10 buildings as well as an extensive collection of tools and artifacts from the area, including Nordland boats. In connection with the museum, there is a photo archive and village archive, as well as a small "stone cabinet".
- The isles Vomma and Esøya lie on the southwest side of Hamnøya. In the year 1095, the king visited Hamn. On the way there, King Magnus Berrføtt and his followers ran into Tore from Steigar and other resistance people and took them by surprise. They tried to escape ashore, and there was a big battle between the kings' followers and members of the resistance. Tore from Steigar and his son in law Egil were hanged at Vomma Island and it is told that they were buried at Esøya.
Esøya has several large occurrences of steatite, which were mainly used for building materials. Stone from this island built Tjøtta Church, St Knut's Church in Tilrem, as well as the Dome in Trondheim. The excavation took place in the middle ages.
The northern side of Esøya is often referred to as "the coast's biggest guest book". The first runes date back to the year 1000, but there are also hundreds and thousands of signatures from the 16th century and up to our time. Countless sailors have engraved their names here.
- The rock carvings in Vistnesdalen were discovered in 1936. There are two separate grounds in connection with an old settlement dating back to the Iron Age, about 4000-4500 B.C.
- At Kremmertorget Market in Visthus, you can purchase arts and crafts. Coffee and food sold. Open Saturday and Sunday 12.00-18.00 (in summer).
- Alstahaug Church and Petter Dass Museum are located in Alstahaug municipality (on the way to Sandnessjøen). The oldest part of the church was built in the period between 1150 and 1200. It is an excellent example of the romantic style and building methods. The main building in Alstahaug Vicarage probably dates back to 1655, and was rather new when Petter Dass settled there in 1689.
Petter Dass is considered the first real Norwegian poet since the saga age. His ability to find and express the common denominator between the known and the strange touched the hearts of both local fishermen and educated gentlemen of the civil service. His words in "Nordlands Trompet", "Katekismussanger" and "Evangeliesanger" soon became known and loved.
Both the church and the museum are open every day in the period from 15.06 to 15.08 between the hours of 11.00 and 17.00. Guided tours four times a day.
